The Union Cabinet on Wednesday (September 24) approved the payment of Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equivalent to 78 days’ wages for railway employees for the financial year 2024-25.

The decision, taken under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will benefit 10.91 lakh non-gazetted railway employees.

According to the government release, the total financial implication of the bonus amounts to ₹1,866 crore. Each eligible employee will receive a maximum payment of ₹17,951.

The PLB covers various categories of staff, including track maintainers, loco pilots, train managers (guards), station masters, supervisors, technicians, technician helpers, pointsmen, ministerial staff, and other Group ‘C’ employees.

The bonus is typically disbursed before the Durga Puja and Dussehra festivals each year. The government stated that the payment acts as an incentive to motivate employees towards improving railway performance.

Indian Railways reported strong operational performance in FY 2024-25, with a record freight loading of 1,614.90 million tonnes and nearly 730 crore passengers carried during the year.
