The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved a 5% increase in the minimum support price (MSP) of raw jute for the 2026-27 (July–June) season.

The MSP has been raised by ₹275 per 100 kg to ₹5,925 per 100 kg, Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said while briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting. The decision will entail an expenditure of ₹4.3 billion for the government.

According to an official release, the revised MSP ensures a return of 61.8% over the all-India weighted average cost of production. The government stated that the increase is in line with its policy of fixing MSPs at levels that provide remunerative returns to farmers.

The latest hike takes the MSP of raw jute to ₹5,925 per 100 kg for the 2026-27 season, compared with ₹5,650 per 100 kg in the previous season. The minister said the ₹275 per 100 kg increase represents a nearly 5% rise over the existing level.

The government also highlighted that the MSP for raw jute has been increased 2.5 times since 2014-15. The MSP stood at ₹2,400 per 100 kg in 2014-15 and has now been raised to ₹5,925 per 100 kg for 2026-27.

The decision is aimed at ensuring remunerative prices to jute growers and safeguarding their income, while maintaining adequate procurement under the MSP mechanism.
