Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was set on fire. According to Bangladeshi news outlet The Daily Star, the incident took place at Rupganj, and the authorities are currently investigating the matter.
Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shabzel Hossain told the Bangladeshi news outlet that the incident occurred at around 3:45 am (local time) at the Shimulia Bazar area.
He noted that miscreants broke a window and poured “petrol or similar substance” inside before setting the office ablaze. As of now, police have identified two individuals as suspects, and the hunt for others is still ongoing.
The timing of it all
The incident took place two days after BNP emerged as the l
argest political party in the Bangladeshi elections, winning over 200 seats out of the 300 in the Bangladeshi parliament. Mansur Mia, president of Rupganj union Jubo Dal, said construction of the office began about a month ago and was completed a week earlier.
Party leaders and activists were present there until midnight on Friday, he added, mentioning that the fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday. The blaze was later extinguished with the help of locals, but furniture and other items inside the office were damaged.
“We suspect it was a petrol bomb. Otherwise, the fire would not have spread so quickly,” Mansur added. Upazila BNP General Secretary Bashir Uddin Bacchu condemned the incident and expressed suspicion that members of rival political groups might have been involved in the incident.
Meanwhile, OC Shabzel Hossain told The Daily Star that local BNP leaders are preparing to file a written complaint over the incident. “Necessary legal action will be taken following investigation once a complaint is lodged,” he added.
