In an exclusive interview with Firstpost, the director spoke about the expectations he has from the fresh season, working with such a giant of an ensemble, and the evolution of content post the OTT boom

There’s a new show coming up called Bindiya Ke Bahubali – Season 2, which returned on 21st January 2026 on Amazon Prime Video & Amazon MX Player.

Directed by Raj Amit Kumar, the new season takes the political power struggle into a brutal family war. Darker, more intense, and deeply personal, the conflict between Bade Davan and Chhote Davan escalates with shifting alliances and deadly consequences, season 2 promises high-stakes drama, sharp writing, and characters pushed to their limits.

Edited excerpts from the interview

How excited are you because the second season has come and fans are also looking forward to it?

If you have seen season one, it was a setup and season two is a payoff. So, you can expect fireworks, fireworks, and more fireworks. So whatever was established in season 1 as the world of Bindiya pretty much explodes in season 2. So I am looking forward to the response.

You have assembled some of the finest actors in the country. We have Saurabh Shukla, we have
Ranvir Shorey, Seema Biswas. What was the discussion that went behind the casting of the series?

The discussion was to get the right actors for the characters that I have written. So I think it started from that simple place. There were too many interesting characters that were written in the script and I had the support of the producers to go out and cast amazing actors for it rather than looking for a quote-unquote star, which I guess every show or everything that goes out is looking to have a face of that kind, just one or two. I was more interested in getting amazing actors for the show.

Saurabh Shukla and Seema Biswas gave a classic film like Bandit Queen. What are your memories of watching that movie and did it have any impact on you as a filmmaker?

I was just having this chat with someone. Was this question fed to you or you asked from your heart? (Smiles) Because every time I see a rustic movie, whenever we talk about bandits or village and villains, I mean Bandit Queen is the first film that comes to my mind because I am a 90s kid. You’re a 90s born kid.

I was a grown up boy at that time and Bandit Queen is a defining moment for me because that film really germed the idea…a very visceral impact on me that you know I just wanted to do something with films and having Seema ji to act in my first show that is being shot in India was a blessing and she’s just phenomenal actor and a phenomenal human being, lots of love to her.

How was your experience of working with Ranvir Shorey because he’s too an incredibly versatile actor?

He’s leading the sort of the title role it was for the show. He’s become a close friend. We come from very very different backgrounds, both of us. It starts from a place, a person that you never know and now you are just working with them and then it takes a while to get into the groove. But after that was set, it was just a beautiful experience of working with him. I don’t know why people say he’s a difficult actor and gives a hard time.

I had none such experience with him. He is willing to go all the way if he finds that, I would say if he finds the right director, I’m kind of in a way praising myself maybe. But I think he will give himself up to any director who is sincere and honest.

What is your take on the way the OTT platform has evolved, and content and cinema has changed ever since the pandemic, when the OTT boom happened?

It has made its place as a central decision making corporation in the industry which I feel is problematic. Much of it is advertising based also as you have to make cinema that is ‘advertising friendly.’ That’s a problem. There’s no official censorship at this point and yet, there’s censorship. You can take them as new studios. I don’t know what OTT even means anymore. There’s more content getting made and there’s a new studio system that has happened. However, I don’t see too much positivity in too much content being made. There were only few good works coming out earlier, I see the same case for the future.
