Bangladesh on Sunday said it was “surprised and shocked” after India allowed former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to address a public event in New Delhi. The government warned that her remarks threaten the country’s peace, security, and democratic transition.
Hasina in India since August 2024
Hasina, 78, has been in India since August 2024 following a student-led uprising that ended her 15-year rule. On Friday, she delivered her first public speech since leaving office in an audio address to a press club in Delhi.
Convicted in absentia
In November, a Dhaka court found Hasina guilty in absentia of incitement, issuing an order to kill, and failing to prevent atrocities. She was sentenced to death. Bangladesh’s foreign ministry said allowing her to speak publicly “constitutes a clear affront to the people and government of Bangladesh” and could “seriously impair bilateral relations.”
Calls to overthrow interim government
In her address, Hasina urged citizens to overthrow the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, calling it corrupt and incapable of ensuring free and fair elections ahead of the February 12 polls. She also called for the protection of minorities, women, and vulnerable groups, and demanded a “truly impartial” UN investigation into events since her government’s fall.
Awami League leaders join the event
Other Awami League leaders, including former ministers Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury and AK Abdul Momen, addressed the event, reiterating accusations against Yunus and questioning the fairness of the upcoming election.
Bangladesh criticises India
The Bangladeshi government criticised India for not extraditing Hasina despite repeated requests, saying the public address endangered the country’s democratic process and security. It also warned the Awami League would be held responsible for any violence or unrest linked to the party before and during the elections.
