A passenger bus travelling overnight from Pokhara to Kathmandu plunged into the Trishuli River, killing eighteen people and injuring twenty-seven
A passenger bus travelling overnight from Pokhara to Kathmandu plunged into the Trishuli River in the early hours of Monday, killing at least 18 people and injuring several others.
Authorities confirmed that six women and 11 men died in the crash. A total of twenty-seven passengers were rescued with injuries, including eight women, eighteen men and one minor girl. All were taken to various hospitals for treatment. Foreign tourists were also among those on board.
The bus had been travelling along the Prithvi Highway when it veered off the road at around 1 am near the Bhaisepati area in Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality-5 of Dhading district. The vehicle plunged nearly 300 metres down a slope and was later found heavily damaged near the riverbank.
Rescue effort hindered by terrain and darkness
Rescue operations were jointly carried out by the Nepal Army, the Armed Police Force Nepal, and the Nepal Police. The teams faced significant challenges due to steep terrain, darkness, and limited relief resources.
Survivors were transported nearly one kilometre downstream by boat before being carried up to the roadside and taken to hospitals by ambulance. Chief District Officer Suvedi said the injured were rescued using torchlight during the night and acknowledged a shortage of relief materials at the site.
