As Iran is moving ahead to pick a new Supreme Leader after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s assassination, Israel on Wednesday warned that whoever it is will be a “target for elimination”.
While there has not been any formal announcement, a report has said that the Assembly of Experts in charge of the process has finalised Mojtaba Khamenei, the late Supreme Leader’s son, as the successor.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on X that any Supreme Leader of Iran will “continue leading the plan for the destruction of Israel, to threaten the US, the free world, and the countries of the region, and to oppress the Iranian people” and will remain “an unequivocal target for elimination”.
“It does not matter what his name is or the place where he hides. The Prime Minister and I have instructed the IDF to prepare and act by all means to fulfill this mission as an integral part of the objectives of Operation Lion’s Roar (Sha’agat Ha-Ari),” said Katz in a statement on X.

The United States and Israel have killed dozens of top Iranian leaders, including Khamenei, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) chief Mohammad Pakpour, Ali Shamkhani, the Head of National Defense Council, and armed forces chief Sayyid Abdolrahim Mousavi.
In the interim, the country is currently being run by a three-person leadership council of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary head Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and senior cleric Ayatollah Ali Arafi.
The United States and Israel have continued to hit the length and breadth of Iran. In retaliation, Iran has also been attacking Israel and American personnel and bases across the region, striking Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Saudi Arabia. Since the weekend, both the sides appear to have hardened their positions and there do not appear to be any talks underway to resolve the crisis.
