As US President Donald Trump continues to promote his “Make America Great Again Dream,” dream, a latest analysis of the UN voting trend indicates that his turbulent policies are also making “America alone”. The Focaldata analysis also shows a latest trend of American allies siding with China.
The analysis, based on UN voting data and public opinion surveys, showed world powers — especially in Europe — are less and less aligned with Washington’s stances. Meanwhile, diplomats from the world’s fastest-growing economies in particular are voting more with China.
The findings are coming at a time when Beijing is looking to bolster economic ties with traditional US partners, with the recent visits to China by the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The shift could accelerate: “The US pressure campaign against European liberal democracy is only just beginning,” a Berlin-based expert wrote, adding that some officials in Europe are preparing to treat Washington as an outright adversary.
The new world map or the world order
In the Focaldata analysis, the researchers depicted the latest trend throught a map. The findings showed that the United States is looking increasingly isolated on the world stage. Based on the 2026 GDP estimates, the GDP-weighted mean position, the American advantage over China has collapsed by about 25 per cent.
The European Union saw the largest shifts, moving by an average of 12 percentage points away from the United States. Canada, which used to be America’s most reliable ally, also moved 20 points. Canada’s shift can also be seen with the country’s Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent visit to China.
However, the US is not completely alone. Gulf states have moved towards the US, with the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar shifting by 13, 13 and 12 points respectively under the Trump administration. When we split out Trump’s first and second terms, the shifts are even more stark. The European drift has accelerated since January 2025.
However, the analysis found little evidence that European movements towards China are not due to the rise in pro-China sentiment. According to a survey conducted by the group, just 4 per cent of Britons have a favourable view of Xi Jinping, a paltry figure matched by the 4 per cent of Americans and 5 per cent of French people who are the same. Hence, the analysis believes that the shift is not due to Xi’s goodwill but because of Trump’s isolatory policies.
