Composer AR Rahman says the way messages are distorted as they travel is one of the world’s key problems, speaking on The Great Indian Kapil Show while promoting Gandhi Talks. This comes amid controversy created by his comments during a recent interview.
Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has said that one of the biggest problems facing the world today is how messages are often misinterpreted or distorted as they are passed on. The remarks came during his appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, where he was promoting his latest film, Gandhi Talks.
Rahman says messages ‘get corrupted on the way’
On the show, Rahman participated in a classic whisper-game exercise, where a phrase travels from one person to the next. He used the moment to highlight how easily information can change in transit.
“This is a good exercise to see how information gets misunderstood. Different states, different cultures,” he said, adding, “The problem with the world is this, how messages get corrupted on the way.”
Rahman appears on Kapil Sharma show amid controversy
Rahman’s remarks come amid ongoing discussion about an earlier interview in which he spoke about changes in the Hindi film industry and referenced how perceptions and narratives can shift. In an interview with BBC Asian Network, Rahman claimed he has been
offered less work in the last eight years because of a “power shift” in the Hindi film industry.
“Maybe in the past eight years because a power shift has happened and people who are not creative have the power now. It might be a communal thing also… but it is not in my face. It comes to me as Chinese whispers that they booked you but the music company went ahead and hired their five composers,” Rahman said during the interview. His remarks created an uproar, with celebs commenting on the matter and many opposing his views. It ultimately
forced him to offer a clarification a couple of days later.
While he did not directly revisit that controversy on the show, his comment about message distortion was widely seen as relevant to how public conversations evolve.
