Priya Sachdev Kapur files Rs. 20 crore defamation suit against sister-in-law Mandhira Kapur Smith in Delhi High Court amid Sunjay Kapur estate dispute. Here’s all you need to know.

Priya Sachdev Kapur, widow of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, has filed a Rs. 20 crore civil defamation suit in the Delhi High Court against her sister-in-law Mandhira Kapur Smith and a podcaster, escalating the bitter legal battle within the Kapur family over the Rs. 30,000-crore estate.

What is the defamation case about?

According to court filings, Priya Kapur alleged that statements made in podcasts, interviews and on social media platforms were “false, defamatory” and caused serious harm to her reputation, emotional distress and social humiliation. She has sought damages of Rs. 20 crore and requested the court to restrain the accused from publishing or circulating any further allegedly defamatory material.

The suit also seeks directions for the removal of existing content from digital and social media platforms.

‘Resolve it amicably’, Delhi High Court’s advises

The civil suit comes just days after the Delhi High Court urged members of the Kapur family to attempt mediation and resolve their differences amicably.

During the hearing, the court reportedly said, “Try to resolve the issue amicably. Try to respect the relations. Resolve it in a peaceful manner.” The judge added that family wealth should not become a source of prolonged conflict and bitterness.

Sunjay Kapur estate dispute

The legal battle is rooted in
disputes surrounding the RK Family Trust and the distribution of Sunjay Kapur’s vast estate, estimated at around Rs. 30,000 crore. The matter gained further traction after actor Karisma Kapoor’s children challenged the validity of Sunjay Kapur’s will, alleging they had been unfairly excluded from inheritance.

Mandhira Kapur Smith and Sunjay Kapur’s mother Rani Kapur have also questioned aspects of the estate settlement, intensifying the family feud.

Earlier criminal defamation case

This is not the first legal action initiated by Priya Kapur. She had earlier filed a criminal defamation complaint against Mandhira Kapur Smith, alleging that public statements made about her amounted to “false assertions, insinuations and personal attacks” and were part of a sustained campaign to damage her reputation.

What happens next?

The Delhi High Court is expected to hear the matter in the coming days. With multiple civil and criminal cases running parallelly, the Kapur family dispute continues to remain one of the most high-profile inheritance battles in recent times.
