Turkmenistan’s Coast Guard successfully rescued all 14 crew members, including Indians from the Iranian cargo ship Rona after it encountered distress in the Caspian Sea.
All 14 crew members aboard the Iranian dry cargo vessel Rona were safely rescued after the ship encountered trouble in the Caspian Sea on Wednesday, Turkmen authorities said. The Turkmenistan Coast Guard received an SOS signal from the Rona on January 14, prompting an urgent response from maritime emergency services.
Acting swiftly in line with international navigation standards, state agencies successfully evacuated everyone aboard, according to a statement from the Turkmen Foreign Ministry. Preliminary information indicates that the rescued crew includes citizens of Iran and India.
State agencies responsible for emergency response and prevention “took all necessary measures to save those on board,” the ministry said, adding that the Turkmen side is now carrying out relevant procedures as required under international maritime law.
International maritime cooperation and ongoing procedures
The Rona’s distress triggered coordinated efforts by Turkmen coastal services, which mobilised rescue vessels and personnel to the scene after receiving the emergency signal. This prompt action ensured the safety of all crew members, averting potential loss of life in the often challenging conditions of the Caspian Sea.
While specific details about the cause of the incident have not been released, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry emphasised that the rescue operation was carried out in strict accordance with global maritime safety regulations, reflecting cooperation aimed at safeguarding lives at sea.
Officials said that once immediate safety concerns were addressed, Turkmen authorities began following the standard international procedures for such incidents which include ensuring the wellbeing of the rescued crew and coordinating further steps with relevant national and international bodies.
