We’ve already reported to you about JSW Motor’s plans of entering the Indian automotive market as a standalone brand with rebadged Chinese vehicles, more specifically, a Jetour T2-based plug-in hybrid SUV and a Chery iCar V23-based electric SUV. Now we have learnt there’s a third product in the pipeline which will be based on Chery’s Jaecoo J5. Incidentally, a prototype of the Jaecoo J5 was recently spotted testing in India, further underscoring their intent.

  1. Jaecoo J5 will be a midsize SUV positioned against the likes of Creta Electric
  2. Gets a 60.9kWh battery pack with a NEDC claimed range of 461km
  3. Will be locally assembled in India

Jaecoo J5-based EV: what do the spy shots reveal?

The spotted prototype near Pune was heavily camouflaged, but the overall profile of the SUV and the detailing on the tail lights suggests that this is Chery’s Jaecoo J5. Like Jetour and iCar, Jaecoo is yet another sub-brand under China’s Chery Automobile.

Overall, the Jaecoo J5-based SUV can be expected to sport a clean and minimalistic design with typical SUV design traits. Abroad, the J5 gets slim LED headlamp and tail lamps, both connected by a contrasting trim at the front and rear, and 19-inch aero-optimised wheels. On the inside, the minimalist theme continues with a large 14.8-inch vertically-oriented touchscreen dominating the touchscreen. Higher-spec variants also come equipped with a panoramic sunroof, powered and ventilated front seats, a 540‑degree camera system, 6 airbags and Level 2 ADAS. However, all Jaecoo branding on the J5 can be expected to be swapped out with JSW Motor’s own branding.

Jaecoo J5 EV technical details

The international‑spec Jaecoo J5 is just under 4.4 metres long, is a strict five‑seater and is marginally larger overall than the Hyundai Creta. It gets both hybrid and full-electric powertrains abroad, but for India, JSW Motor is understood to be only considering the all-electric version.

The all-electric J5 uses a 60.9kWh battery pack feeding a 210hp, 288Nm front‑axle motor, and has a claimed NEDC range of 461km. Fast‑charging capability of up to around 130kW is quoted overseas, along with a 0‑100kph time of 7.3sec.

Initially, the model is expected to be assembled from CKD kits at JSW Motor’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant, with deep localisation possibly following at a later stage. However, a launch timeline is still unclear, and it is expected to only arrive after the Jetour and iCar-based offerings. It will be positioned to rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6 and Vinfast VF 6 in the Indian market.
