Two drones struck the US Embassy in Riyadh, causing a small fire as Saudi defences intercepted additional drones amid Iran’s widening retaliatory attacks
The Saudi Ministry of Defence said in a statement that two drones struck the United States Embassy in Riyadh early in the morning on Tuesday and ignited a small fire, while Iran pressed forward with its retaliatory attacks across the Gulf.
“The
US Embassy in Riyadh was attacked by two drones, according to initial assessments. The attack resulted in a limited fire and minor material damage to the building,” the statement noted, following accounts from witnesses who told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that they had seen smoke rising over the compound that houses the US diplomatic mission.
A source familiar with the Saudi Army, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the matter, said that Saudi air defences intercepted four drones aimed at the diplomatic district of Riyadh during the incident.
In response, the US Embassy issued a shelter-in-place advisory for American citizens in Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dhahran.
