India’s net Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue rose 7.9 per cent year-on-year in February, marking the strongest growth in six months and underscoring resilient economic activity despite global headwinds.
Official data showed total net GST revenue stood at Rs 1,61,014 crore in February 2026, compared with Rs 1,49,278 crore in the same month last year . In absolute terms, February’s net collection was the third highest in the past six months, after January ( Rs 1.70 trillion) and October (Rs 1.69 trillion). On a sequential basis, however, collections declined nearly 5.7 per cent from January.
Gross GST revenue increased 8.1 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1.83 trillion in February, compared with Rs 1.69 trillion a year ago . Sequentially, gross revenues fell about 5 per cent from January’s Rs 1.93 trillion.
Import-led growth
Gross revenue from imports grew a robust 17.2 per cent to ₹47,837 crore in February, while gross domestic revenue rose 5.3 per cent to Rs 1.35 trillion . The data signals sustained import activity and steady domestic consumption.
After accounting for refunds, net domestic revenue rose 6.2 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1.25 trillion, while net revenue from customs (GST on imports) jumped 14.2 per cent to Rs 35,181 crore.
Total refunds increased 10.2 per cent year-on-year to Rs 22,595 crore. Domestic refunds declined 5.3 per cent, while refunds related to imports surged 26.5 per cent, reflecting higher export and trade-linked activity.
Compensation cess discontinued
The Centre discontinued the GST compensation cess from February 1 as part of the transition arrangement after meeting back-to-back loan obligations raised during the pandemic. The Rs 5,063 crore reported as cess in February relates to transactions undertaken in January.
Net cess revenue fell sharply to Rs 5,063 crore from Rs Rs 13,481 crore in the year-ago period.
Broad-based state performance
State-wise data showed healthy growth across several regions. On a pre-settlement basis, states such as Bihar (up 23 per cent), Sikkim (up 67 per cent), Meghalaya (up 33 per cent), Gujarat (up 9 per cent), Karnataka (up 11 per cent), Maharashtra (up 6 per cent), and Telangana (up 12 per cent) posted notable gains in February.
Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh continued to remain among the top contributors to GST revenues, reflecting strong industrial and services activity.
