Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger rebukes President Trump’s State of the Union, accusing his administration of corruption, misleading claims on the economy, and harmful policies affecting healthcare, trade, and immigration
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger delivered a Democratic response to Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, painting a starkly different picture of the nation’s progress than the president offered in his speech.
Speaking from Colonial Williamsburg, Spanberger challenged Trump’s claims of economic success and argued that everyday Americans are still struggling with high costs and insecurity.
Spanberger opened her remarks by asking a series of pointed questions aimed at voters: “Is the president working to make life more affordable for you and your family? Is the president working to keep Americans safe both at home and abroad? Is the president working for you?” She then declared bluntly, “Tonight, as we watched our nation’s lawmakers gather for a joint session of Congress, we did not hear the truth from our president.”

A central focus of Spanberger’s rebuttal was rising living costs.
She said Trump’s trade policies, particularly
heavy tariffs, have raised household expenses, forcing families to pay more on everyday essentials. Spanberger also criticised the “One Big Beautiful Bill” legislation backed by Republican lawmakers, arguing it threatens rural hospitals, undermines healthcare access, and drives up energy and housing costs.
Spanberger didn’t stop at economics; she attacked the administration’s immigration enforcement strategies as well, accusing federal agents of making unwarranted arrests and terrorising communities.
“Our broken immigration system is something to be fixed — not an excuse for unaccountable agents to terrorize our communities,” she said, highlighting instances in which nursing mothers and children were separated or detained.
The governor also accused Trump of using the presidency to benefit himself and his inner circle, calling the level of alleged wrongdoing “unprecedented.” She cited issues including the handling of the
Epstein files, controversial crypto dealings, and close ties to wealthy donors and foreign elites. “He’s enriching himself, his family, his friends,” she said.
