The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of the civil enclave at Srinagar International Airport at an estimated cost of ₹1,677 crore.

Sharing the development on social media, Modi said the Cabinet decision on expanding the Srinagar airport would boost the economy of Jammu & Kashmir, strengthen connectivity and encourage tourism in the region.

The expansion project, spread over 73.18 acres, marks a significant step in strengthening aviation infrastructure and connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir. The scope includes the construction of barracks for security personnel. The airport, operated by the Airports Authority of India within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force, was designated as an international airport in 2005 and is located around 12 km from Srinagar city.

The new terminal building will span 71,500 square metres, including 20,659 square metres of existing structure. It is designed to handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours and will have an annual capacity of 10 million passengers per annum (MPPA). The expanded apron will accommodate 15 aircraft parking bays, including one widebody (Code E), comprising nine existing and six proposed bays. The 3,658m x 45m runway will continue to be operated by the Indian Air Force. A multi-level car parking facility with capacity for 1,000 cars will also be developed.
