Air India has cancelled all flights to and from New York and Newark on Monday due to a severe winter storm forecast to bring heavy snow and strong winds across the US Northeast.
Air India on Sunday cancelled all flights to and from New York and Newark in the United States scheduled for Monday, February 23, citing a severe winter storm and forecasts of heavy snow.
“A severe winter storm with heavy snow is forecast for New York, New Jersey, and adjoining areas on 22 and 23 February, which is likely to significantly impact flight operations. In view of the safety, well-being, and convenience of our passengers and crew, all Air India flights to and from New York and Newark have been cancelled on 23 February,” the airline said in a statement.
The airline added that its teams will provide assistance to passengers booked on the affected flights.
Blizzard warnings for 30 million in Northeast US
Across New York City and the northeastern United States, around 30 million people are under blizzard warnings as the storm is expected to bring heavy, wet snow and strong winds starting Sunday. More than 1,000 flights have already been cancelled, and travel of all kinds could become nearly impossible. The storm also threatens widespread power outages.
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani warned residents that the blizzard could be more dangerous than the January storm. “I am asking all New Yorkers to stay inside and stay off the roads for your safety. These have the potential to be even more hazardous conditions than we faced the last time around,” he said.
‘Super bomb’ storm to intensify
Forecasters said the storm is likely to intensify rapidly on Sunday. Senior forecaster Brian Hurley described it as “a super bomb” to Bloomberg news agency. Cities and towns along the East Coast have rushed to prepare for heavy snowfall and strong winds, with blizzard warnings issued from Maryland to Massachusetts.
The National Weather Service warned that the storm could be far more severe than initial estimates. Snowfall of 1 to 2 feet (30–61 centimetres) is expected in several areas, including New York City, Long Island, Boston, and coastal regions of New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Flooding is also possible in parts of New York and New Jersey.
