‘Do Deewane Seher Mein’ Movie Review: Siddhant Chaturvedi and Mrunal Thakur starrer and Ravi Udyawar directorial film is unique in many ways and has many lessons to learn from.
Cast: Siddhant Chaturvedi, Mrunal Thakur, Ila Arun, Joy Sengupta, Ayesha Raza, Inesh Kotian, Sandeepa Dhar
Director: Ravi Udyawar
Language: Hindi
Directed by Ravi Udyawar, the film marks a fresh on-screen pairing of the young stars in a thoughtful love story set against the backdrop of contemporary urban life in Mumbai. Most importantly, the film is simple and good to see two beautifully flawed people finding strength in each other.
The plot revolves around Roshni (Mrunal Thakur) and Shashank (
Siddhant Chaturvedi), living in Mumbai who fall in love with each other and most importantly love each other the way they are. It’s a perfectly imperfect love story that we hardly get to see in today’s Hindi cinema where actors are so obsessed with their looks. There is something indeed very refreshing about metro-city love story and it is good to see filmmakers exploring it.
Last year we saw Anurag Basu’s Metro…In Dino which reminded us about the simplicity of love. Yet again, in this film we get to see a love story which isn’t dark or toxic, but has its own flaws. The best thing about cinema is when, filmmakers try and explore stories that are closer to reality with two beautifully flawed leads Roshni and Shashank.
And why is it that we find it so difficult to accept stories which are not dark and complex. Life always doesn’t need to be complicated. Sometime, it is good to enjoy movies that are simple with no foreign locations, no gun giggles and bloodshed. Yet, ‘Do Deewane Seher Mein’ has a solid story. And the performances of both, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Mrunal Thakur are effortlessly charming.
Both Roshni’s and Shashank or Sasank believe that they are not good enough and they are unable to fit into the beauty and personality standards set by the people around them. While the two of them meet in an arranged marriage setup, they fall in love with each other after even after Roshni (Mrunal Thakur) rejects _Sasank (_Siddhant Chaturvedi).
Shashank deals with a speech impediment that causes him to mispronounce certain words (like saying ‘Seher’ instead of ‘Shaher’ and ‘Sasank’ instead of ‘Shashank’), Roshni battles her own self-doubt. Roshni thinks she isn’t good enough because she is often compared with her impeccably turned out fair skinned and slim elder sister by her relatives, but definitely not by her father (Joy Sengupta) and grandmother (Ila Arun). In fact, Roshni shares a beautiful relationship with her father.
The best thing about this story is its simplicity, despite tempestuous and awkward start, they find the uniqueness in each other and most importantly they become each other’s support. They start spending a lot of time together, sharing all their problems and most importantly they start enjoying their companionship. And any relationship becomes like ‘home’ only when it is raw and unfiltered.
Shashank too has a great colleague in office who is again extremely supportive and helps him to navigate through the pressures of his job and even tries to solve his personal problems. That’s the beauty of any relationship whether it is with family members, friends or colleagues. Do Deewane Seher Mein at the end makes you believe that small budget movies can be entertaining too.
