A Bangladeshi man was arrested by Delhi Police after he was accused of killing a Hindu police official in the country. The man, named Mahdi Ahmed Reza Hasan, has now been deported by the immigration department.
Hasan was reportedly arrested at the Delhi airport as he tried to flee India and take a flight to Europe. He is accused of killing a Hindu cop named Santosh Chowdhury last year during the nationwide student protest against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s new BNP-led government on Wednesday warned that “mob culture” will not be tolerated, amid a rise in mob violence, extrajudicial killings and attacks on minority communities.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the senior-most minister in the new Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government, said that the law and order issue was one of three priorities and the administration would take steps to end “mob violence”.
“Absolutely,” he told reporters when asked if the new administration would take proper steps to contain the “mob violence”.

A resident of Habiganj in Bangladesh, Hasan, allegedly killed Chowdhury during an attack in a police station on August 5, 2024.
The sub-inspector’s body was found hanging from a tree. Reports suggest that a viral video had shown the Bangladeshi citizen claiming responsibility for killing the cop.
Who was the cop?
Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhury had been married for less than a year when violent protests demanding Sheikh Hasina’s ouster erupted in Bangladesh. Three months after he was killed in an attack on the Baniachang police station in Habiganj, his wife gave birth to a son. He was his parents’ only child.
On the day of the incident, students and residents organised a march to protest deaths reported elsewhere. As the procession neared the police station, officers opened fire, leaving six people dead. Enraged villagers then surrounded the station and set it ablaze, trapping several policemen inside. According to reports, Chowdhury was lynched and burned alive by the mob.
