MG recently introduced the Majestor as its new flagship ICE-powered SUV. Based on the Gloster, it sports a revised exterior design, new features, and off-road-oriented hardware. Initially, it was understood that both SUVs would be sold alongside each other, but we have now learnt that the Gloster will be phased out in favour of the Majestor.

  1. Gloster will soon be discontinued from MG’s lineup.
  2. Majestor to launch in April with an expected price of above Rs 40 lakh.

A brief history of the Gloster’s sales performance

The Gloster was launched in 2020 as a direct rival to the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. Sales initially appeared promising, with the model receiving over 2,000 bookings and selling out for MY2020. However, this strong start did not last, and sales soon dropped to triple-digit figures.

MG attempted to revive demand by introducing the ‘Blackstorm’ variants of the Gloster, but this had only a marginal impact on overall sales. By the end of 2025, numbers had dwindled further into single digits by the end of model’s lifecycle.

What are MG’s aspirations with the Majestor?

With the upcoming Majestor, MG aims to rebuild its brand perception in the segment. The SUV is not developed from the ground up but is instead based on the Gloster’s underlying architecture. It features a more rugged appearance, additional features, and enhanced off-road hardware, including a low-range transfer case, crawl mode, and differential locking.

High transaction prices, strong margins, and brand-building potential make the premium three-row SUV segment strategically important. It accounts for approximately 35,000 to 40,000 units annually and is currently dominated by Toyota’s Fortuner and Legender.

MG preparing a 1,000+ unit production capacity for the Majestor

“This has been a very consistent category over the last few years. We do not see it suddenly jumping in volume, but what is changing is that Indian consumers are becoming more comfortable buying higher ticket-size vehicles,” said Anurag Mehrotra, Managing Director, JSW MG Motor India, to our sister publication Autocar. The carmaker has not confirmed the Majestor’s sales target, but is preparing to set up its production capacity of over 1,000 units per month. The Majestor is expected to be priced above Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom).
