After winning the
13th Bangladesh national elections, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has decided to break away from tradition. According to The Daily Star, the new cabinet’s swearing-in ceremony will not be held at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
Instead, the new government’s swearing-in ceremony will take place on Tuesday at the South Plaza of the
National Parliament. As per the report, preparations are underway to host the ceremony at the Parliament building, as per BNP’s preference. Multiple sources from the Chief Adviser’s Office and the Cabinet Division have confirmed to The Daily Star that the final call of the venue came from
Tarique Rahman’s party.
The sources further confirmed that the swearing-in of newly-elected MPs will take place at the same venue at 10:00 am (local time) on Tuesday. The cabinet oath-taking will commence from 4:00 pm (local time).
Why it matters
Sources from the Cabinet Division stated that since the independence of Bangladesh, every government’s swearing-in ceremony has taken place at Bangabhaban.
An official involved in the preparations, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that the swearing-in of MPs involves minimal formality and does not require separate guest invitations or catering arrangements.
However, the oath-taking of the cabinet would entail inviting local and foreign guests, providing hospitality, and managing various stages of the ceremony for the prime minister, ministers, and state ministers, The Daily Star reported.
Due to this eleventh-hour decision, officials are now compelled to redesign the entire plan for the ceremony. Interestingly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been invited for the oath-taking ceremony, reflecting the improvement of ties between the nations. It remains unclear if the Indian PM will visit
Dhaka on Tuesday.
