Three people died and 22 others were injured after a fire tore through temporary workers’ accommodation in Budakeszi, with an explosion suspected as the cause
At least three people were killed and nearly two dozen injured when a building used as temporary accommodation for workers caught fire in the early hours of Friday in Budakeszi, a suburb west of Budapest.
According to Hungary’s National Directorate General for Disaster Management, firefighters brought the blaze under control after it engulfed the two-storey property, located about five miles (eight kilometres) from the capital.
Emergency crews pulled several survivors from the building and also removed three gas cylinders from the scene.
Victims found beneath collapsed roof
The bodies of two men and a woman were discovered beneath the collapsed roof, a spokesperson for the disaster management authority said.
More than 40 paramedics and 18 emergency vehicles were dispatched to the site as rescue efforts continued through the morning.
At a news conference on Friday, a spokesperson for the Pest County Police Headquarters said an explosion in one of the rooms likely triggered the fire. Several irregularities were also identified in the building, including gas usage that did not comply with regulations.
Police confirmed that a criminal investigation has been launched.
Paramedics treated 22 people for injuries sustained in the blaze, including four who were reported to have life-threatening injuries. The injured were transported to eight hospitals in Budapest for further treatment.
