PM Modi hails Seychelles joining Colombo Security Conclave, says will Indian Ocean partnerships – Firstpost

PM Modi met Seychelles President Herminie in New Delhi on Monday and welcomed Seychelles as a full member of the Colombo Security Conclave, with maritime security and defence cooperation high on the agenda.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed Seychelles as a full-time member of the Colombo Security Conclave, saying defence and maritime cooperation were key pillars of the bilateral relationship, as he met Seychelles President Dr Patrick Herminie in New Delhi.

The two leaders discussed key issues, including maritime security, economic ties, and regional cooperation. They held bilateral talks at Hyderabad House before addressing a joint press meet in the national capital.

Seychelles joins Colombo Security Conclave

Prime Minister Modi said the move would strengthen efforts towards peace and stability in the Indian Ocean and further deepen ties between the two countries.

“As maritime neighbours, the blue economy is a natural area of cooperation,” PM Modi said, adding that India would share its expertise with Seychelles in marine research, capacity building, and data sharing.

Focus on renewable energy and climate solutions

PM Modi said India and Seychelles would expand cooperation in renewable energy, resilience, and climate-adaptive solutions. He also underlined that Seychelles is an integral part of India’s Vision MAHASAGAR, with cooperation spanning land, water, and sea.

MoUs signed, joint vision announced

The Prime Minister welcomed the signing of several memorandums of understanding and documents aimed at deepening cooperation between the two countries. He announced that the India–Seychelles Joint Vision would be launched as a roadmap for future engagement.

He said India would share its experience in digital transformation with Seychelles and work together to ensure the supply of affordable and quality medicines, promote medical tourism, and strengthen health infrastructure.

USD 175 million special economic package announced

PM Modi announced a special economic package of 175 million dollars for Seychelles to support projects in social housing, e-mobility, vocational training, health, defence, and maritime security. He said the package would create new employment and skill-training opportunities, especially for the youth of Seychelles.

People-to-people ties and 50 years of relations

PM Modi said the visit came at a significant moment, with India and Seychelles marking 50 years of diplomatic relations. He highlighted the strong people-to-people ties and the contribution of the Indian community to Seychelles’ social and economic life.

“India and Seychelles are connected not just by geography, but by history, trust, and a shared vision for the future,” he said.

Agreements exchanged, Rajghat visit

India and Seychelles exchanged several agreements and MoUs covering areas such as pharmacopoeial cooperation, cultural exchange programmes from 2026 to 2030, digital public infrastructure, and food procurement.

Before the joint press meet, President Herminie paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. The Ministry of External Affairs said Gandhiji’s principles continue to guide and inspire the India–Seychelles partnership.

President Herminie arrived in Delhi on Sunday after engagements in Chennai and Mumbai. This is his first visit to India since assuming office in October 2025 and coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
