At least six people, including an Indian national and two police officers, were injured in a stabbing incident on Saturday at a university hostel in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic, according to local media reports.
Preliminary information suggests that a teenage assailant armed with a knife entered a sports hall within a foreign students’ dormitory at Bashkir State Medical University in the regional capital Ufa and attacked several students, Russia’s Interior Ministry said.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Major General Irina Volk said the suspect resisted arrest, during which two police officers were stabbed. She added that the attacker also injured himself during the confrontation. Authorities did not immediately disclose the identities or nationalities of the injured students.
The Telegram channel 112, citing eyewitnesses, reported that at least one of the victims was an Indian student and claimed there may have been two attackers. However, officials have not confirmed this account.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation into the incident. According to the Baza Telegram channel, the attacker, identified as a 15-year-old, has been hospitalised in serious condition at a local children’s hospital. The injured students and police officers are being treated at a nearby clinical hospital.
Officials said further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
According to eyewitnesses, “there was blood all around,” Ren TV said, showing footage of wounded being taken to hospital by ambulance vans.
