The Pentagon has decided to end military education, fellowships and certificate programs at the Ivy League college as President Donald Trump wages a battle with Harvard over its ideology and policies
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced that the Pentagon will cut all academic ties with Harvard University over the institution’s “woke ideology”.
The Pentagon has decided to end military education, fellowships and certificate programs at the Ivy League college as President Donald Trump wages a battle with Harvard over its ideology and policies.
“For too long, this department has sent our best and brightest officers to Harvard, hoping the university would better understand and appreciate our warrior class,” Hegseth said in the statement.
“Instead, too many of our officers came back looking too much like Harvard – heads full of globalist and radical ideologies that do not improve our fighting ranks,” he said.
The severance will be rolled out in the 2026-2027 academic year, with students attending military classes at the university currently given a chance to complete their courses.
In a separate post on X using his preferred term for the Department of Defense, Hegseth said: “Harvard is woke; The War Department is not.”

He added that the Pentagon will review its ties with all Ivy League colleges for military training and education.
“The goal is to determine whether or not they actually deliver cost-effective strategic education for future senior leaders when compared to, say, public universities and our military graduate programs,” he said.
Trump seeks damages from Harvard
Trump said last week that his administration would seek $1 billion in damages from Harvard University. His statement came after a New York Times report claimed the institution had secured certain concessions during ongoing settlement talks with the government. The development adds to rising tensions over campus protests, university policies and earlier rounds of negotiation.
“We are now seeking One Billion Dollars in damages, and want nothing further to do, into the future, with Harvard University,”
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Trump officials have accused Harvard and other colleges of promoting so-called “woke” ideology while failing to sufficiently protect Jewish students during pro-Palestinian protests, filing legal complaints and demanding exorbitant payouts.
