Novak Djokovic could soon be back representing his country, Serbia, despite moving his family to Greece, the team captain Viktor Troicki has announced. Djokovic has not played for Serbia in the Davis Cup since September 2024.

The 38-year-old’s last match was a World Group I tie against Greece. He was also scheduled to play for them in early 2025, but pulled out due to an injury. However, since then, Djokovic has not played for the Serbian national team in Davis Cup, which he won in 2010.

Will Djokovic play for Serbia again?

The 24-time Grand Slam winner has already spoken about his aim to play at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, but his absence from the Serbian national team has raised a few questions. Some are linking it to his
recent decision to move his family out of Serbia.

After national media hounded Djokovic and ran a smear campaign against the tennis star for supporting protests against President Aleksandar Vucic, the Australian Open 2026 finalist moved his family to Athens, where his children are now also completing their school.

But this won’t stop him from representing Serbia again in the Davis Cup. Serbia captain Troicki said that Djokovic remains interested in playing for Serbia. However, he would be missing the coming weekend’s match between Serbia and Chile in the first round of World Group qualifiers.

“Novak thinks that Serbia can continue to progress in the Davis Cup and he would like to play and keep representing his country,” Troicki was quoted as saying by the Tennis Head.

Troicki clarified that Djokovic’s absence from the Serbian national team is not due to any animosity, but because of the professional challenges of playing at the growing age of 38.

“For over 20 years, Djokovic has played with passion for our country,” he said.

“In recent years, it hasn’t been easy for him to play on different surfaces, and it’s hard for him not to be with the team. But he wants to play when he is available, and he still gives us his support.”
