The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection did not disclose further details in its brief statement on Wang, who also serves as a Communist Party secretary. Investigations into sitting cabinet ministers are relatively uncommon.
The probe comes amid President Xi Jinping’s years-long anti-corruption campaign. Last week, the defence ministry said it was investigating top general Zhang Youxia, who ranks second only to Xi in China’s military hierarchy.
Earlier this month, Xi said the fight against corruption was a battle China “must not lose,” after a record 65 senior officials were placed under investigation last year. The campaign has also widened to include former leaders of universities and state-owned enterprises.
Wang, 63, assumed office in July 2022 after serving as chairman of state-owned power generator National Energy Investment Corp. He was last seen in public earlier this week, when he addressed a routine internal meeting focused on self-criticism among cadres, according to an official release from the Ministry of Emergency Management.
Separately, the anti-graft watchdog also announced an investigation into Sun Shaocheng, the former Communist Party secretary of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, state-run China Daily reported.
