Iranian Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali asserted that the IRGC is a formal and legal military institution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and said targeting an official state force contradicts established international norms
The Iranian Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali has described the European Union’s decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation as a “strategic miscalculation” that disregards “realities on the ground” and violates international law.
In an interview with ANI, Ambassador Fathali asserted that the IRGC is a formal and legal military institution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and said targeting an official state force contradicts established international norms.
Highlighting the IRGC’s role in regional security, Fathali pointed to its efforts against ISIS, arguing that European countries would be facing terrorist groups on their own streets today had the IRGC not been at the forefront of the fight against terrorism.
He described the EU’s move as a form of “ingratitude” for the sacrifices made by the force in enhancing international security.
On Iran-India relations, Fathali noted that the recent visit of India’s Deputy National Security Adviser Pavan Kapoor to Tehran falls within the framework of ongoing cooperation and regular security dialogue.
He emphasised the long-standing partnership between the two nations in security and regional affairs, and expressed hope that upcoming visits by senior security officials will further strengthen ties.
Regarding perceived threats from the United States, Fathali said that while Iran does not seek conflict, it remains fully prepared to defend its sovereignty.
He warned Washington to reconsider military and security calculations and avoid actions that could escalate tensions, stressing that Tehran has always preferred diplomatic solutions.
On domestic matters, the ambassador described the situation in Iran as stable despite recent challenges.
He said President Masoud Pezeshkian is closely monitoring the economic situation with a focus on improving citizens’ livelihoods, and credited the leadership of Ayatollah Khamenei and national unity for helping the country navigate difficult periods successfully.
