Calls for boycotting the 2026 FIFA World Cup have taken over the internet with the policies of United States led by the Donald Trump administration making fans across the world uncomfortable.
No sporting event attracts as many eyeballs as the FIFA World Cup. The insane viewership brings high value advertisements and this makes football the biggest sport on the planet.
This global nature of
football makes it a perfect platform to advance not just your product but politics as well. Last few World Cups have been all marred with political tussles of one kind or another.
The 2018 World Cup in Russia was politically charged, as was the last one which took place in Qatar in 2022. With Russia and Qatar both being authoritarian states, questions were raised over their human rights records. Views were divided but the tournament went on and both of them were hugely successful.
The 2026 edition of the World Cup was expected to not attract as much political attention. However, in came Donald Trump and brought his politics with him to the tournament. The critics soon rushed in to hit back at the American president and now the upcoming tournament has become as political as any event before it.
Things have got to a point where some are even calling for boycott of the World Cup and they do have a point as well.
Criticism piles up over US policies
What the United States is doing internally as well as externally are both playing a part in the criticism that it’s facing currently with regards to the World Cup.
Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement has charged up American politics. The recent killings by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcements (ICE) have fueled outrage. While these steps are part of domestic policies, they will have an impact on the World Cup as well.
The upcoming football tournament is the grandest ever with 48 teams participating in the World Cup for the first time in its near-100-year-old history. Fans from all of these countries will pour into the United States in large numbers.
As the immigration agencies increase their aggressive approach, this could endanger fans. In fact, former
FIFA President Sepp Blatter recently backed the calls of boycotting the tournament as fans from some countries might have to face poor treatment.
Another point of contention related to this is the fact that a lot of countries, several of which are participating in the World Cup, face visa restrictions. Fans from countries like Iran and Haiti will have tough time getting visas while a whole lot of other countries too will face added scrutiny.
If fans cannot come to the US to support their countries, then it reduces the grandeur of what promised to be the grandest World Cup ever. Also, the enormous prices of tickets has already forced fans from poor countries to boycott their plans to attend these games.
The geopolitical angle
US forces recently captured the president of Venezuela much to widespread criticism. Many critics have asked if Russia can be pushed out of FIFA over its invasion of Ukraine, why should US be treated any differently over its violation of the sovereignty of Venezuela. At the same time, American support to Israel over its war in Gaza has also been heavily criticised.
As if these issues were not enough, Trump’s recent demand of taking over Greenland has further enraged fans in Europe, the global powerhouse of football which accounts for 16 of the 48 teams featuring in the upcoming tournament. Social media has been full with fans wanting their countries to pull out of the World Cup over Trump’s demands.
Reports also stated that a military intervention in Greenland from the US could have forced UEFA members to take a big call regarding the World Cup. However, that
tragedy seems to have been averted. But knowing Trump, you never know!
Trump’s tantrums
Add to all this, the displeasure in FIFA over the body’s president Gianni Infantino’s increasing closeness with Trump. After Trump was overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize, FIFA introduced a peace prize of its own to honour the American president.
Trump was also the star figure at the World Cup draw in Washington DC and it would not be a surprise if he remains a
consistent presence during the tournament.
FIFA has previously banned several countries for political interference in their football federations. Critics are now alleging that FIFA itself is now guilty of the same.
The 2026 World Cup was expected to be a celebration of unity with 48 teams coming together to give a once-in-a-lifetime event. However, it risks becoming a symbol of division if things continue to go on the same track.
With a few months still remaining before the tournament starts, a course correction is needed. The focus must return to football and the lead has to be taken by the Trump administration itself.
