A leaked donor recording captures Senator Ted Cruz sharply criticising President Trump, Vice President JD Vance and adviser Peter Navarro over tariffs, stalled India trade talks and the party’s foreign-policy shift, underscoring deep Republican tensions ahead of 2028.
An audio recording shared by a Republican source captures US Senator Ted Cruz telling private donors in early and mid-2025 that he sharply criticised Vice President JD Vance, White House adviser Peter Navarro and, at times, President
Donald Trump over trade policy and the stalled India–US tariff agreement.
The nearly 10-minute clip, first reported by Axios, reveals internal tensions and highlights ideological differences within
Republican ranks ahead of a possible 2028 presidential primary.
Cruz presents himself in the recording as a traditional, free-trade, pro-intervention Republican, contrasting his outlook with what he describes as Vance’s more isolationist stance.
Warnings over tariff strategy
In the audio, Cruz questions Trump’s tariff-focused trade approach, saying it could seriously harm the US economy and even create impeachment risks. He recounts that after tariffs were introduced in early April 2025, he and several senators held a late-night call with the President urging a rethink.
According to Cruz, the discussion became heated and extended past midnight.
“Trump was in a bad mood. I have been in conversations where he was very happy. This was not one of them,” Cruz said.
He told donors he had warned the President about the political consequences if economic conditions worsened.
“You are going to lose the House, you are going to lose the Senate, you are going to spend the next two years being impeached every single week,” Cruz said he told the President.
Trump’s reported reply: “F**k you, Ted”.
Cruz also took aim at the administration’s description of the tariff rollout as “Liberation Day”. After a donor used the phrase, Cruz joked that anyone on his team who said those words would be “terminated on the spot”.
India trade deal and internal resistance
A substantial portion of Cruz’s remarks centred on trade talks with India. He told donors he had been “battling” the White House to push a deal forward and identified those he believed were obstructing progress.
When asked who was slowing negotiations, Cruz named economic adviser Peter Navarro, Vice President Vance and, “sometimes”, Trump himself.
In the recording, Cruz repeatedly connects Vance with conservative podcaster Tucker Carlson, accusing Carlson of promoting an anti-interventionist and antisemitic line in foreign policy debates. He suggests Vance mirrors Carlson’s worldview.
“Tucker created JD. JD is Tucker’s protege, and they are one and the same,” Cruz said.
Although Cruz has publicly clashed with Carlson on social media in recent months, the audio indicates he draws a firmer private distinction between Carlson and Vance than he has done in public, despite the Vice President’s friendship with the podcaster.
