Protests erupted in Minneapolis after federal agents fatally shot a man during an immigration enforcement operation, intensifying unrest already fuelled by earlier federal shootings.
A 37-year-old man was shot dead early on Saturday near West 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue in south
Minneapolis during a targeted immigration enforcement operation, prompting unrest and political dispute. The man, identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a resident of South Minneapolis and a
United States citizen, was killed in an incident recorded by bystanders that later spread widely online.
This marks the third fatal shooting involving federal agents in Minneapolis in about three weeks, following the earlier death of
Renee Good.

Family members and reports said Pretti worked as an intensive care unit nurse and had no serious criminal history beyond a few traffic tickets. Local police confirmed he was believed to be a lawfully armed gun owner with a permit to carry.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said agents were carrying out a targeted immigration enforcement operation when Pretti approached US Border Patrol officers with a handgun and two magazines. DHS officials stated that agents attempted to disarm him, he “violently resisted”, and one officer fired “defensive shots”.
Protests and crowd control
Large crowds gathered after the shooting, leading to demonstrations and confrontations between residents and law enforcement. Authorities used tear gas and other crowd control tactics in efforts to disperse the mob.
The shooting drew criticism from local officials, including Minnesota’s Governor and the Mayor, who challenged the federal account and called for calm and an investigation. Supporters aligned with the MAGA movement responded alongside
Donald Trump and JD Vance, accusing Minnesota of failing to comply with the law and obstructing ICE from carrying out its duties.
Political tug-of-war
Trump accused Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey of “inciting insurrection through their rhetoric” after the fatal shooting.
“The Mayor and the Governor are inciting Insurrection, with their pompous, dangerous, and arrogant rhetoric! Instead, these sanctimonious political fools should be looking for the Billions of Dollars that has been stolen from the people of Minnesota, and the United States of America,” Trump said in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump questioned why local police were not deployed to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and claimed authorities had been prevented from carrying out their duties.
“Those Fraudsters who stole the money are going to jail, where they belong! This is no different than a really big Bank Robbery,” Trump said, adding that public criticism of federal enforcement actions was “a cover up for this theft and fraud.”
He ended the post by repeating his accusation that state and city leaders were “inciting insurrection” through “pompous, dangerous, and arrogant rhetoric,” and wrote in capital letters: “LET OUR ICE PATRIOTS DO THEIR JOB!”
State leaders question federal investigation
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said federal authorities “cannot be trusted” to investigate the fatal shooting of an American man in his state by immigration officers.
“The federal government cannot be trusted to lead this investigation. The state will handle it period,” Walz said, accusing the federal immigration operation underway in his state of “sowing chaos and violence.”
Minneapolis police and federal authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting. No charges have been announced.
