‘My parents were wanting to get me married at a very young age but…’ – Firstpost

Rani Mukerji has completed three decades in Hindi cinema. She began her career with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat in 1997 and is now gearing up for Mardaani 3 which releases in cinemas on January 30. To celebrate the completion of her three decades, she was in a conversation with filmmaker Karan Johar and revealed a lot about her childhood and parents.

Rani Mukerji told the filmmaker, “Growing up, I think it was never really something that occurred to my dad that I’m going to go ahead in life and will work and do stuff like that. I think it was more always a boy’s responsibility. I think that responsibility, I think they saw through my brother. I think with me, it was very clear. They were wanting to get me married at a very young age. But destiny had other plans for me.”

Mukerji added, “I never realised that probably my mom was probably finding a way to make the financial situation in the house better. Because they knew that if I do well in this thing, maybe things would be better. But probably at that point of time, I didn’t see it from that angle.”

Rani Mukerji has spoken about the response it has received online. In a statement, the actress said, “Shivani Shivaji Roy is not a character I switch off when the camera cuts. I carry her with me. Because through her, I’ve seen what it really means to serve.”

Mukerji added, “I’ve seen how lonely courage can be. I have immense respect for the cops of our country who show up every day — quietly, without complaints, without medals, serving our country and protecting us silently. Mardaani franchise is my salute to them and I feel so happy and proud to see the people of my country pour so much love for the police force.”
