Yemen’s separatist group, the Southern Transitional Council (STC), has announced its dissolution a day after its leader, Aidarous al-Zubaidi, fled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The announcement has come after several rounds of airstrikes and ground offensive by a Saudi Arabia-backed coalition.
The Southern Transitional Council (STC), a separatist group in Yemen that sought to carve out a separate nation in the country’s south, announced on Friday that it is dismantling, according to Associated Press.
The announcement came a day after STC’s leader, Aidarous al-Zubaidi, fled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after several rounds of airstrikes and ground counter-offensive by a Saudi Arabia-backed coalition.
It is a dramatic turnaround for the UAE-backed group that mounted an offensive last month and seized large swathes of territories in southern Yemen from the Saudi-backed internationally-recognised Yemeni government. The offensive escalated the simmering tensions between Saudi Arabia and the UAE and brought to fore their opposing interests in Yemen.
This is a developing story.
