Bangladesh Police on Wednesday arrested Yasin Arafat, a former madrasa teacher and imam, who is the prime accused in the killing of Hindu worker Dipu Chandra Das, according to a Times of India report, citing local media.
Yasin, 25, was arrested in Sarulia under the jurisdiction of Demra police station with assistance from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
He is accused of leading the mob that attacked Dipu at a factory gate in Mymensingh district, dragging his body to the Square Masterbari area and setting it on fire.
According to the report, Yasin is the son of Gazi Mia and a resident of South Hobirbari in Valuka. He had been serving as an imam at the Shekhabari mosque and had worked as a madrasa teacher for about 18 months.
Following the killing of Dipu Chandra Das on December 18, Yasin allegedly went into hiding for nearly two weeks, moving between different madrasas in Dhaka.
During this period, he is reported to have secured a teaching position at Suffa Madrasa using a false identity.
Authorities have so far arrested 21 people in connection with the case, with nine of them giving confessional statements before a court.
The arrest comes amid a prolonged period of unrest in Bangladesh that began with the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a 32-year-old student leader and a prominent figure in the August 2024 uprising that led to the exit of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hadi’s death triggered widespread violence, including attacks on minority communities.
Dipu was killed the same day after being caught in mob violence over allegations of blasphemy.
