Tata Motors has launched the much-awaited Safari petrol at Rs 13.29 lakh. The automaker’s flagship SUV, earlier sold only with a diesel engine, now gets the in-house developed TGDi Hyperion turbo-petrol, which debuted on the Sierra. Along with the Safari, Tata has also introduced the same engine in the Harrier.

The Safari petrol exclusively gets a new top trim in the form of the Accomplished Ultra. Over the former top Accomplished X+ trim, the Ultra gets features like a Samsung 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Dolby Atmos, a digital interior rearview mirror (IRVM) with an in-built dash cam, a white-and-brown dual-tone interior theme, on-board navigation, a memory function for the outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs), a wash function for the reversing cameras, and a 65W type-C port. Moreover, the Red Dark edition of the Safari is solely available with this trim.

Produces slightly more power and torque than the Sierra’s unit
While the Safari carries over the turbo-petrol from the Sierra, the 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine produces slightly more power at 170hp and 280Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels, and the Safari petrol can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Safari petrol goes up against SUVs such as the Hyundai Alcazar, the MG Hector Plus and the Mahindra XUV 7XO. As of now, the XUV 7XO is the most powerful of the lot, with 203hp and 380Nm of torque. The Safari’s power figures are only second to the XUV 7XO’s, followed by the 160hp, 253Nm turbo-petrol Alcazar and the 143hp, 250Nm Hector Plus. Interestingly, the Safari petrol delivers the same amount of power as the diesel at 170hp.

The Safari petrol price ranges between Rs 13.29 lakh and Rs 15.29 lakh. Interestingly, the Tata Safari has the widest price range, with its base variant the most affordable and the top-spec version the most expensive. The MG Hector Plus has the highest starting price here.
