Russia accuses US of ‘piracy’ in Caribbean over Venezuela blockade – Firstpost

Russia’s foreign ministry said on Thursday that the United States was reviving piracy and banditry in the Caribbean Sea by blockading Venezuela and said it hoped that US President Donald Trump’s pragmatism would help avoid a disaster.

Russia’s foreign ministry on Thursday accused the United States of bringing back acts akin to piracy and banditry in the Caribbean by imposing a blockade on Venezuela while expressing hope that US President Donald Trump’s pragmatic approach would help avert a crisis.

Describing the situation as lawless, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the Caribbean Sea was witnessing a revival of practices long thought obsolete, specifically the seizure of others’ property.

Zakharova said Moscow consistently supports efforts to reduce tensions and voiced hope that Trump’s pragmatism and rational judgment would lead to mutually acceptable solutions reached in line with international law, helping prevent a disastrous outcome.

”We confirm our support for the efforts of the government of Nicolas Maduro aimed at protecting sovereignty and national interests, and maintaining the stable and secure development of his country,” she said.
