Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, the head of Pakistan’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F), has criticised the government’s hypocrisy of opposing India’s Operation Sindoor in response to an attack on its soil but using the same rationale to justify airstrikes inside Afghanistan.

A Pakistani cleric and politician has flagged the hypocrisy of the Pakistani ruling establishment regarding its positions on India and Afghanistan.

In a reference to India’s Operation Sindoor in May, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman said at a convention on Monday that the Pakistani leadership has done exactly the same in Afghanistan with airstrikes purportedly targeting the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) that it criticised India for.

Rahman said, “You say that we attacked our enemy in Afghanistan and justify those strikes. Then India also says that it attacked its enemies in Bahawalpur, Muridke, and the headquarters of groups responsible for the attack in Kashmir. Why are you then objecting to India’s reasoning?

“And, if you object to India’s reasoning, how do you justify your own actions in Afghanistan that carry the same reasoning? You make the same accusations against Afghanistan. What are you going to do? Admit you are wrong or admit they are right?”

The video of Rahman’s remarks has surfaced on the internet.

Rahman was referring to multiple rounds of airstrikes that Pakistan has conducted this year inside Afghanistan purportedly against TTP targets.

The year so far has been the deadliest in more than a decade and Pakistan has blamed TTP backed by the Afghan Taliban for the surge in violence. While Pakistan has justified such cross-border attacks as rightful action terrorism, the Taliban have said that such strikes have harmed civilians.

In October, such strikes triggered cross-border clashes between Pakistan and Afghan Taliban in which dozens were killed and hundreds were injured. The weekslong violence was the worst episode of violence between the two sides since Afghanistan’s Islamist takeover in 2021.

In other clips of his speech, Rahman further criticised the hypocrisy of Pakistan during the War on Terror.

While the Pakistani public as well as the government were on the same page during the Afghan jihad against the Soviets, the Pakistani government pursued a dubious policy later on, according to Rahman.

While you aligned yourself with America, gave it military bases, and allowed it to do bombings in Afghanistan, you also sheltered the Afghan Taliban by saying they were pro-Pakistan forces, said Rahman.
