The 55-year-old visionary, whose work revolutionised modern gaming, died in a car crash in California on Sunday. Tragic accident north of Los Angeles
According to reports by NBC4, Zampella was driving his Ferrari on a road north of Los Angeles when the vehicle lost control shortly after it exited a tunnel and slammed into a concrete barrier. The impact caused the car to burst into flames. The California Highway Patrol confirmed that Zampella was trapped inside the vehicle and died at the scene, while a passenger who was thrown from the car later died in hospital.
Gaming pioneer and industry leader
Zampella began his career in the mid 1990s and quickly rose to prominence for his creativity and leadership. He co-founded Infinity Ward, the studio that launched the first Call of Duty game in 2003 alongside Jason West and Grant Collier. The series, partly inspired by the events of the Second World War, became a defining force in the first-person shooter genre and went on to sell over 500 million copies worldwide.
His remarkable career continued with the founding of Respawn Entertainment in 2010, where he led teams behind hugely successful titles such as Titanfall, Apex Legends and STAR WARS Jedi Fallen Order. In 2017, Respawn became part of Electronic Arts, and Zampella later took charge of EA’s Battlefield studio group, overseeing several high-profile releases including Battlefield 6.
