Amorim keeps January signing speculations open

United are keen to get a new defensive midfielder in January but Amorim also said that the team could also be looking for other positions with an eye on the future. He also said that players leaving for AFCON will not affect the team’s activity in the market.

“The only thing that we will try to bring now – and in the end of the season – are players that are perfect for our future,” Amorim said ahead of United’s trip to Aston Villa on Sunday.

“It’s not going to be to save something in this moment, to cope with the losses of three players for AFCON. It’s not going to be like that. Even if we try to bring one player, maybe it’s not the position that we need more. So I don’t know what is going to happen, but it’s possible that we can do something.

The January transfer window will be opening on New Year’s Day. The deadline for any deals for Premier League clubs is 19:00 GMT on Monday 2 February. After Villa, Amorim’s men play both Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers at home before the transfer window opens.

The Red Devils are currently seventh in the Premier League table following a 4-4 draw against Bournemouth.
