Former England legends have urged Kobbie Mainoo to leave Manchester United on loan or permanently because of limited game time under coach Ruben Amorim. Chelsea are reportedly interested in acquiring him in the January transfer window.
Former England stars Alan Shearer and Paul Scholes believe Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo should think about leaving the club if he wants to get regular game time. They said that
Ruben Amorim should allow Mainoo to leave on either loan or a permanent deal in the January transfer window, as he is not getting enough game time anyway.
Mainoo has made 11 appearances in the league so far this season, and he has come as a substitute in all of those games. Even though
Manchester United have had a difficult season, the midfielder has not been given a chance to start. Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said “Clearly the manager doesn’t fancy Kobbie Mainoo. Because if you can’t get into a team when they’re really struggling, then there’s an issue.”
“This is not the first time we’ve seen that Manchester United players are not fitting into what the manager wants. And he hasn’t been afraid to get rid of them or let them go out on loan or sell them. And that looks as if it’s going to be the case for him. I don’t know, I’m not inside the club, I don’t know what his attitude’s like. But I guess looking from the outside, then it would be best for both parties if he could get out and play some football in January and onwards,” Shearer said.
“Whether that’s on loan or whether that’s a permanent deal, then we’ll have to wait and see. But clearly, if you’re not playing, you have to look at the situation and get out,” he added. Meanwhile, there are reports that the 20-year-old could be on the move, with clubs like Chelsea, West Ham and Napoli showing interest. However, Manchester United are said to be reluctant to leave him as of yet.
Amorim defends decision to limit Mainoo’s minutes
Ruben Amorim has defended his decision to limit Mainoo’s game time, saying he sees him as a starter like the rest of the squad but has to make choices based on what he believes will help the team win. Amorim stressed that he does not focus on individual players and only cares about getting results.
“I see him [Mainoo] as a starter like the other players. I just have to make a choice and then in the end, it’s not been Kobbie. In the future, I don’t know. Again, I always think the same thing with Casemiro. [He] was not playing and then he plays. I just want to win games. I don’t care who is playing,” Amorim said.
Paul Scholes also shared Shearer’s concern about Mainoo’s situation. The former United midfielder said it is painful to see a home-grown talent not being used, especially in a team that is struggling to control matches. “The kid [Mainoo] is being ruined, not being played in a team that can’t control a game of football. Hate seeing home grown players leave but it’s probably best for him now, enough is enough,” Scholes wrote on Instagram.
