As the calendar turns towards 2026, the United States finds itself at a historic crossroads.
For US President Donald John Trump, the second year of his second term is shaping up to be more than just a legislative cycle.
From the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding to the high-stakes 2026 US midterm elections, and from the football pitches of the FIFA World Cup to the negotiating tables of a potential Ukraine peace deal, will 2026 be the year the “Trump Doctrine” achieves its full velocity?
For the Trump administration, 2025 was about demolition. Will 2026 be about construction?
An end to the war in Ukraine?
The most immediate test of Trump’s second-term legacy will arrive before the spring thaw in Eastern Europe.
On December 16, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that
a deal was “closer now than we have been ever,” following a series of clandestine meetings in Berlin led by special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
The shape of that deal, however, has sent shockwaves through European capitals. Leaked drafts of the so-called “28-Point Peace Plan,” reveal a framework that prioritises immediate stabilisation over territorial integrity.
The crux of the plan lies in Point 21, a clause that represents a total inversion of previous US policy.
According to the text, the United States and its allies would agree to recognise Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk as “de facto Russian,” while the status of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia would be “frozen along the line of contact.”
While the plan stops short of de jure legal recognition,
the practical implication is clear: the map of Europe is being redrawn.
“Well, they’ve already lost the territory, to be honest,” President Trump remarked candidly, when pressed on the concessions.
In exchange for these territorial losses, Kyiv is offered a “comprehensive non-aggression agreement” but must accept a cap on its military. Point 6 of the US draft
proposes limiting the Ukrainian Armed Forces to 600,000 personnel — a figure European allies are currently trying to negotiate up to 800,000.
The plan also mandates that “Nato will not expand further,” effectively closing the door on Ukrainian membership for the foreseeable future.
To sweeten the deal for a sceptical Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the White House has proposed a massive economic injection. The plan outlines hundreds of billions in reconstruction fund, capitalised by frozen Russian sovereign assets.
The United States would reportedly retain control over part of the profits from this venture, a detail that aligns with the Trump’s “America First” transactionalism.
The draft also mentions a “long-term economic cooperation agreement”
covering rare earth metal extraction and artificial intelligence infrastructure, signalling the administration’s intent to turn post-war Ukraine into a hub for American enterprise.
Trump’s Venezuela blockade
If Europe is the site of Trump’s peacemaking ambitions, South America has become the theatre of his martial resolve.
On December 17, in a move that shocked the United Nations, Trump formally
designated the government of Nicolás Maduro a “Foreign Terrorist Organisation” and ordered a “total and complete blockade” of Venezuelan waters.
The announcement came days after US Southern Command reported
the seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker allegedly transporting sanctioned crude.
In what can only be called an unusual move, the US military has amassed a very large force in the Caribbean reportedly to the tune of around 15,000 personnel along with 11 warships, the nation’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R Ford, as well as five destroyers, three amphibious assault ships, and two cruisers.
The US president wrote on his social media platform, “Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America. It will only get bigger, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before — Until such time as they return to the United States of America all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us.”
By physically blocking the export of oil —
Venezuela’s only significant source of hard currency — the White House believes the Maduro government will be unable to pay its security forces, leading to a coup or a popular uprising.
Critics warn the blockade is an act of war that could trigger a humanitarian catastrophe and a new wave of migration — the very thing Trump has vowed to stop.
US budget cuts in 2026
Trump’s FY 2026 budget request, released in summary earlier in 2025, provides the blueprint for what critics are calling the dismantling of the administrative state.
One of the most notable new line items is a $500 million allocation for the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) initiative.
Overseen by US Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, this programme aims to tackle “chronic disease” by challenging pharmaceutical norms and promoting alternative health lifestyles.
To pay for these new priorities and the extension of the 2017 tax cuts, the administration has proposed deep cuts to the federal bureaucracy.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) faces a staggering $3.5 billion reduction, with funding for chronic disease prevention and environmental health eliminated entirely.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) faces a $646 million cut, eliminating anti-terrorism grant programmes just as the administration ramps up rhetoric about homeland security.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), a frequent target of Maga ire for its role in election security, is set to lose nearly $500 million and be “refocused” solely on network defence.

July 4, 2026, will mark the 250th anniversary (Semiquincentennial) of the United States. For a US president who thrives on spectacle, this date is the North Star of Trump’s cultural agenda.
Sidestepping the congressionally appointed commission, the White House has
empowered “Task Force 250” to plan a year of festivities.
The US Mint has already begun producing “1776-2026” dual-dated coinage, and the “National Garden of American Heroes” — a pet project from Trump’s first term — is being fast-tracked for a July 2026 dedication.
The legislation has reportedly appropriated $40 million for a sprawling monument complex, likely to be situated near Mount Rushmore or in the Virginia suburbs.
The garden’s inclusion of conservative icons alongside Founding Fathers is intended to cement a specific, patriotic narrative of American history — one that stands in stark contrast to the “1619 Project” narratives favoured by the cultural left.
While figures like George Washington and Martin Luther King Jr are included, the task force has also reportedly approved statues for conservative icons such as Antonin Scalia and Rush Limbaugh, alongside controversial military figures like General George Patton.
Simultaneously, the administration is reportedly partnering with Michigan-based Hillsdale College to launch a “1776 Curriculum” for the anniversary year.

The FIFA World Cup
returns to North America in June 2026, and Donald Trump has positioned himself as its unofficial master of ceremonies.
The relationship between Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino has blossomed into a powerful alliance.
In a move that stunned the sports world, Infantino
awarded Trump the inaugural “FIFA Peace Prize” at a Kennedy Center gala earlier this month. Infantino, who has visited the White House multiple times, thanked Trump for establishing
a federal task force to oversee the tournament.
However, behind the photo-ops, a logistical crisis looms.
With
US travel bans expanded in late 2025 to include nations like Senegal and Ivory Coast — both nations that have qualified for the tournament. They join a list that already includes World Cup participants Iran and Haiti.
Trump has also threatened to pull matches from host cities that he deems “sanctuary jurisdictions,” specifically targeting New York/New Jersey, the site of the final.
This effectively bars thousands of fans from these nations from entering the United States.

Enter Mayor Mamdani
While Trump is busy in Washington, a new political foil has emerged in the very city that launched his career.
On January 1, 2026, Zohran Mamdani will be
sworn in as the mayor of New York City.
In a political earthquake that few pundits predicted, Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist state assembly-member, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, securing 50.8 per cent of the vote.
Mamdani’s platform — rent freezes, city-run grocery stores, and higher taxes on the wealthy — is the antithesis of the “Trumpomics” dominating Washington.
But it is his stance on immigration that sets the stage for a showdown in 2026.
Mamdani has vowed to “Trump-Proof” New York, pledging to use city resources
to shield undocumented immigrants from the ramping deportation force, even as Trump threatens to withhold federal funds.
Mamdani did manage to secure an Oval Office meeting with Trump in November after which the latter quipped that “we agreed a lot more than I would have thought.”
For the White House, Mamdani is a convenient villain: a socialist, a “communist lunatic”, a first-time Muslim mayor of a “failing” liberal city.
The friction is already palpable.
Mamdani has vowed to be the “World Cup Czar,” fighting FIFA and the White House to lower ticket prices,
which currently average $4,000 for the final.
Trump’s Nobel pursuit
Hovering over all these machinations is Trump’s most personal desire:
the Nobel Peace Prize. After missing the nomination deadline for 2025, the Trump diplomatic machine went into overdrive.
As of December 2025, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has received formal nomination letters from the governments of Israel, Pakistan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Pakistani nomination, citing
Trump’s role in de-escalating cross-border tensions with India, has been touted as a diplomatic coup orchestrated by US State Department backchannels.
Many analysts have opined that Trump only wants the medal because it is the only thing that former US President Barack Obama has that he doesn’t.
And if Trump pulls off a successful Ukraine peace deal, the Nobel committee in Oslo will have a very hard time ignoring him.
The US midterm map
All roads in 2026 lead to November 3. The midterm elections will be
the first nationwide test of Trump’s second term, and the map presents a unique challenge for the Republican majority.
Senate Republicans are defending a majority won in 2024, but they face headwinds in key swing states.
