A Long Island father and youth coach was left with serious head injuries after being attacked outside the Beacon Theatre following a dispute over $20.
A night out in Manhattan ended in serious injury for a Long Island father after a confrontation with a street vendor escalated into a violent assault outside the Beacon Theatre, police sources and family members said.
Sean Llewellyn, 47, had just left a concert at the Upper West Side venue on Broadway near West 75th Street on the night of November 30 when he approached a man selling knickknacks outside, according to the sources.
Llewellyn handed over $20 for a purchase and was apparently owed change, but the vendor ran off with the bill, the sources said. When Llewellyn chased after him, several other people joined the vendor and began beating him.
The attack left Llewellyn with a traumatic brain injury and a broken eye socket, according to a GoFundMe page organised on behalf of his family. No weapons appeared to have been used during the assault, sources said.
Family faces long recovery and financial strain
His family said Llewellyn faces a lengthy recovery and is expected to undergo surgery, according to the fundraising page.
“Sean is a dedicated family man, a proud sports dad, and the ‘fun coach’ everyone loves,” the page reads.
“As the primary provider for his family, including his three young boys at home, this tragedy has created an overwhelming financial strain,” his relatives wrote.
“With Sean unable to work and significant medical expenses ahead, the family needs support now.”
Llewellyn, who lives in Long Beach, is a youth hockey coach. The GoFundMe page said he and his wife, Shannon, “are devoted and dedicated members of their community”.
“They consistently take time away from their own family to support fundraising for others in need, chair church events, and volunteer in countless ways,” their loved ones wrote.
“Their generosity and commitment have touched so many lives, and now, in their time of need, the community has an opportunity to give back.”
No arrests had been made in connection with the attack as of Friday.
