A fire swept through a seven-storey office building in central Jakarta on Tuesday
A fire swept through an office building in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, on Tuesday, leaving at least 17 people dead, police said.
The blaze tore through the seven-storey structure, sending thick black smoke towering above the area and triggering panic among residents and workers in the Central Jakarta neighbourhood. Emergency crews responded as flames rapidly engulfed the building, though the full extent of the damage was not immediately known.
Fire services rushed quickly to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze, while a rescue operation continues to search for additional victims inside the building, Reuters reported.
Condro said the fire began on the first floor around midday before spreading to higher levels. Some employees were eating lunch inside at the time, while others had already left the office, he added.
“Now, we are still focusing on evacuating victims and to do fire cooling,” said Susatyo Purnomo Condro, the head of Central Jakarta police.
The building houses Terra Drone Indonesia, a company that supplies drones for aerial survey work across sectors ranging from mining to agriculture.
