Legendary Bollywood actress Rekha was honoured at the 2025 Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, where her enduring legacy as one of Indian cinema’s most iconic stars was celebrated. Rekha made a rare public appearance at the screening of the newly restored 4K version of ‘Umrao Jaan’, the 1981 classic that immortalized her as the unforgettable courtesan-poetess.

Draped in an elegant ivory-and-gold silk saree, with classic jewellery and her signature bun adorned with a pearl-gold brooch, she exuded a timeless grace that captivated everyone present. She was joined by the director of ‘Umrao Jaan’, Muzaffar Ali.

Rekha was later called onto the stage to receive her glass trophy, the hall erupted in applause. As reported by Gulf News, she reflected on what films have taught her about love, life, and vulnerability. In her address, Rekha shared a message of humility and introspection,
“I am not much of a talker… With Umrao, the dialogues said barely half of what my eyes could feel… My mother used to say, you don’t speak about your achievements or feelings. You don’t teach by preaching. You live by example.”

She added that this festival night was a leap of faith — one she didn’t want to miss. “Never again will I miss the opportunity to come to the Red Sea International Film Festival … Inshallah,” she said.

She also added, “Words are not enough for love. Silent love rules — sometimes words just don’t do justice,” something that the report mentions resonated deeply with the audience and offered a moment of cinematic and emotional transcendence.

As the restored “Umrao Jaan” played on the big screen, Rekha recited lines from the film in the original voice, a moment described by onlookers as “almost spiritual.” The hall, filled with stunned and awed fans, experienced both nostalgia and reverence.
