China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday urged the United Kingdom to uphold the “One-China” principle, amid Beijing’s sharp diplomatic tensions with Tokyo over Taiwan.

The One-China principle asserts that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to a single country, a position rejected by Taipei’s government.

During a meeting in Beijing with Britain’s National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell Wang stressed the importance of maintaining strategic communication and enhancing “necessary coordination” between China and the UK.
