While we had reported in 2023 that Audi was developing a rugged, 4×4 SUV to take on the likes of the Mercedes G-Class and the Land Rover Defender, CEO Gernot Dollner has now hinted that its unveiling is on the horizon. “When asked by Autocar UK if the 4×4 was still a live project, Dollner said, “Stay tuned,” but did not reveal an exact debut timeline. The new flagship SUV will also introduce a radical new design and technology features, which will trickle down to more stablemates.

New Audi 4×4 SUV details so far

May feature Audi’s new simplistic design language

Such a model would build neatly on the carmaker’s legacy of Quattro models, and tap into a highly profitable part of the market in which Audi was unrepresented, ex-Audi design boss Marc Lichte had said in 2023. “There is potential because there are only two premium players in the luxury 4×4 segment…and I think there is a space for a third one,” he had stated then.

Lichte left Audi soon after and was replaced by Massimo Frascella, who was key in shaping the Defender at Jaguar Land Rover from 2011 to 2024. This had led to the speculation that Audi may launch a similar SUV. The upcoming SUV may also feature the brand’s new simplistic design philosophy, which was recently seen with the new Concept C revealed at the 2025 Munich motor show.

Details about the new SUV’s powertrain options are not clear at the moment. Reportedly, it may be aligned with the upcoming electric Traveler SUV from Scout Motors (owned by Volkswagen). The Scout Traveler EV will also be aimed at the Defender upon launch.
