Summer is a season of sunshine, beach trips and outdoor adventures but it also brings a host of skin problems due to increased heat, humidity and sun exposure. Dr Shobit Caroli, Senior Consultant in Dermatology at Max Multi Speciality Centre (Noida) highlights seven common summer skin issues and shares practical tips to prevent them.

Sunburn

Cause: Overexposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays damages the skin, causing redness, pain, and peeling.

Prevention:

*Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before heading outdoors.

*Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

*Wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.

*Seek shade during peak sunlight hours (10 AM to 4 PM).

Heat Rash (Prickly Heat)

Cause: Blocked sweat glands trap sweat under the skin, leading to red, itchy bumps.

Prevention:

Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing to allow sweat to evaporate.

Stay cool with fans, air conditioning, or cool showers.

Use talcum powder or anti-chafing powders to keep skin dry.

Avoid heavy creams that can clog pores.

Acne Breakouts

Cause: Increased sweat and oil production clog pores, leading to acne.

Prevention:

Wash your face twice daily with a gentle, oil-free cleanser.

Use non-comedogenic sunscreen and makeup.

Keep your skin hydrated with a lightweight moisturizer.

Avoid touching your face with sweaty hands.

Dehydrated Skin

Cause: Excessive sun exposure and heat strip moisture from the skin, causing dryness and flakiness.

Prevention:

Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Use a hydrating moisturizer with ingredients like hyaluronic acid.

Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate your skin.

Take cool showers instead of hot ones.

Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation

Cause: Sun exposure triggers melanin production, leading to dark patches.

Prevention:

Apply sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days.

Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face.

Avoid using suntan creams.

Avoid picking at blemishes or sunburned skin.

Fungal Infections

Cause: Warm, humid conditions create a perfect environment for fungal growth, leading to infections like athlete’s foot or ringworm.

Prevention:

Keep your skin dry, especially in folds and between toes.

Wear breathable fabrics and change sweaty clothes promptly.

Use antifungal powders or sprays if prone to infections.

Avoid walking barefoot in public places like pools and locker rooms.

Bug Bites and Allergic Reactions

Cause: Mosquitoes, bees, and other insects thrive in summer, causing itchy bites and allergic reactions.

Prevention:

Apply insect repellent when spending time outdoors.

Wear long sleeves and pants in bug-prone areas.

Use calamine lotion or antihistamines to soothe bites.

Avoid scented lotions or perfumes that attract insects.
